YAG Laser Capsulotomy
Introduction
Posterior or YAG Laser capsulotomy is a special laser surgery used to improve your vision that you
may need sometime after cataract surgery. Patients who have been diagnosed
with posterior capsule opacification (PCO) are treated with this laser.
It is a safe and simple laser procedure, which is commonly performed.
During your cataract surgery, the eye surgeon will remove your cloudy natural lens from inside your eyes. It will be replaced with a clear artificial acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) in the eye’s natural lens capsule. In a few numbers of patients, there are possibilities for the capsule to thicken after surgery and becomes cloudy. As a result, your sight will become misty and blurry. However, it does not damage the eye in any way. This condition was called posterior capsule opacification (PCO).
Hence, through this YAG laser capsulotomy procedure, your ophthalmologist will make a small opening on your lens capsule and thus allowing the light to reach your retina, clearing up your vision again.
Who will usually have this?
A few number of patients who have done their cataract surgery will experience posterior capsular opacification (PCO). PCO can occur few months or even years after the surgery.
However, patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) are known to be more prone to develop PCO.
Procedure

Dilating drop is used to dilate the eye.

Numbing drop is instilled and contact lens is used to help keeping and stationed your eye in the right position.

The laser is pointed onto the back of the lens capsule to make a small opening.

You can resume your normal daily activities as usual.
Majority of patients will notice an instant improvement in vision after the procedure, while others will experience a gradual improvement over a period of days.
