Pterygium Excision

Introduction

A pterygium is a growth of the conjunctiva that can reach to the cornea. This benign or non-cancerous growth is shaped like a wedge. It can reach the cornea and cross the pupil, thus, interfering with your vision.

A pterygium usually does not cause problems or require treatment at the initial stage, but it can be removed through pterygium excision if it affects your vision.

Who needs the excision?

Patients whom the pterygium had extended to the pupil and cause vision problems. Pterygium can cause annoying symptoms such as foreign body and gritty sensation. For minor cases, management will usually involves scheduled eye drops instillation or ointment to soothe and provide comfort to the eyes.

Numbing of the eye

Removal of the abnormal tissue growth

Replacement with a thin graft of normal tissue.

Ensure the eyes are well lubricated post-procedure.

*Patient are advised to limit exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays through sunglasses protection every time being outdoor after the procedure.
