Vitreo-Retinal Surgery (Vitrectomy)

Introduction

Vitrectomy refers to a surgical procedure that removes the jelly-like structure inside the eye known as the vitreous. The surgery aims to:

  • Remove and clean blood within the eye
  • Reattach detached retina
  • Repair wrinkled tissues on the retina
  • Remove foreign object inside the eye from ocular injury

Procedure

The eye is numbed with anaesthetic measures.

An opening is made on the sclera, i.e. the white part of the eyeball.

The surgery starts*

*The surgeon will use a few instruments to either:

  • Remove the hazy vitreous
  • Remove any scar tissues on the retina
  • Remove any lens material or foreign objects
  • Reattach the retina against the wall of the eye
  • Apply laser to repair any tear on the retina
  • Place any means of tamponade; either air, gas bubble or silicone oil – the aim is to keep the retina attached against the wall of the eye

*Your vital signs will be monitored to ensure everything is going on safely.
