Laser Vision Correction

LASIK Eye Surgery in Malaysia

Enjoy greater freedom from glasses and contact lenses with personalised laser eye surgery options, including LASIK, at IKONIK.

What Is LASIK Eye Surgery?

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a laser vision correction procedure that reshapes the cornea to improve how light focuses on the retina.

How LASIK Eye Surgery Works
A thin corneal flap is created, the underlying cornea is reshaped with an excimer laser, and the flap is then repositioned.

For suitable patients, LASIK may reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses.

What Is LASIK Eye Surgery?

Many people start exploring LASIK because glasses, contact lenses or refractive errors affect everyday convenience and visual clarity. LASIK may be used to correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, depending on individual suitability.

Blurry Distance Vision

You may struggle to see road signs, presentation screens or faces clearly without glasses.

Dependence on Glasses Every Day

Constantly needing glasses for driving, work, exercise or daily activities can feel inconvenient.

Contact Lens Discomfort

Dryness, irritation or the hassle of wearing and maintaining contact lenses may lead some people to explore LASIK.

Blurred or Distorted Vision from Astigmatism

Dryness, irritation or the hassle of wearing and maintaining contact lenses may lead some people to explore LASIK.

Difficulty with Sports or Active Lifestyles

Glasses can get in the way during workouts, outdoor activities or travel.

Wanting More Visual Freedom

Some people simply want to reduce their reliance on glasses or contact lenses in everyday life.

Benefits of LASIK Eye Surgery in Everyday Life

For suitable patients, LASIK eye surgery may reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses and make everyday routines feel simpler and more convenient.

Wake Up. See Clearly.

Start your morning with clearer unaided vision instead of immediately reaching for your glasses.

Less Dependence on Eyewear

Reduce your reliance on glasses or contact lenses for work, driving and everyday activities.

More Freedom to Stay Active

Enjoy exercise, travel and outdoor activities with less hassle from glasses or contact lenses.

Everyday Life with Less Hassle

Experience greater visual freedom in the everyday moments where corrective eyewear may feel inconvenient.

Who May Be Suitable for LASIK Eye Surgery?

LASIK may be suitable if your prescription is stable and your eyes and cornea are healthy.

Adults Aged 18+

Generally considered for adults once vision has stabilised.

Stable Prescription

A stable prescription supports more predictable treatment planning.

Suitable Corneal Thickness

The cornea must be thick and regular enough for laser reshaping.

Healthy Eye Surface

Dry eye or surface problems may need treatment first.

Regular Corneal Shape

Corneal mapping (topography) helps identify any irregularities

Realistic Expectations

LASIK aims to reduce dependence on glasses, not guarantee perfect vision.

When LASIK Eye Surgery May Not Be Recommended

Some eye or medical conditions may make LASIK unsuitable or mean treatment should be delayed.

Unstable prescription

Vision that is still changing can make treatment results less predictable.

Thin or irregular cornea

Corneal shape or thickness may make laser reshaping unsuitable.

Keratoconus or corneal ectasia risk

Suspicious corneal findings may require another approach.

Healthy Eye Surface

Dry eye or surface problems may need treatment first.

Regular Corneal Shape

Corneal mapping (topography) helps identify any irregularities

Realistic Expectations

LASIK aims to reduce dependence on glasses, not guarantee perfect vision.

What Happens During Your LASIK Eye Surgery Journey?

A simple overview of what happens before, during and after LASIK eye surgery.
1. Consultation: Check whether LASIK is suitable for your eyes
Your ophthalmologist reviews your prescription, corneal condition and overall eye health before confirming whether LASIK eye surgery is appropriate for you.

What may be checked during your LASIK consultation:

  • Your current spectacle or contact lens prescription
  • Whether your prescription has remained stable
  • Corneal shape, curvature and thickness
  • Dry-eye and ocular surface health
  • Pupil size and overall eye health
  • Your lifestyle, visual needs and treatment expectations
Your eye measurements are reviewed in detail so the treatment can be planned according to your corneal profile, prescription and visual needs. The clinic will also explain how to prepare before the procedure.

Before LASIK eye surgery, you may be advised to:

  • Stop wearing contact lenses for the period advised by the clinic
  • Avoid eye makeup, creams or lotions around the eyes on treatment day
  • Arrange transportation home after the procedure
  • Inform the doctor about medications, allergies and relevant medical conditions
  • Follow any additional pre-treatment instructions provided by your care team
Numbing eye drops are applied and an eyelid holder helps keep the eye open while the laser system is positioned. The cornea is then reshaped according to the planned correction.

During the procedure:

  • Numbing eye drops are used to improve comfort
  • An eyelid holder helps prevent blinking during treatment
  • The laser is aligned according to your eye measurements and treatment plan
  • The cornea is reshaped to correct the refractive error
  • Your care team monitors the eye throughout the procedure

How long does LASIK eye surgery take?

The laser treatment itself is typically brief, while additional clinic time is needed for preparation, positioning and post-treatment checks. Your IKONIK care team will explain the expected timing for your recommended procedure.
After treatment, your eyes are reviewed before you go home. You will receive prescribed eye drops, aftercare guidance and a follow-up schedule to support the early healing period.

Your immediate aftercare may include:

  • Use prescribed eye drops exactly as directed
  • Avoid rubbing, pressing or touching the treated eyes
  • Protect the eyes from water, dust, smoke and accidental contact
  • Rest your eyes and limit activities according to the clinic’s advice
  • Arrange for someone to take you home
  • Attend the scheduled follow-up appointments
Vision may improve quite quickly for some patients, but it can still fluctuate, feel slightly blurry or be more sensitive to light during the early recovery period. Healing and visual stabilisation vary from person to person.

What to expect during recovery:

  • First 24 hours — vision may fluctuate and the eyes may feel dry, watery or mildly uncomfortable
  • Early follow-up — the doctor checks healing, vision and the surface of the eye
  • Following days — continue prescribed eye drops and avoid rubbing or pressing on the eyes
  • Return to activities — driving, work, screen use, exercise, swimming and eye makeup should only be resumed according to your ophthalmologist’s advice
  • Ongoing follow-up — further visits may be recommended to monitor healing and visual stability
Seek prompt advice if you experience unusual pain, increasing redness, discharge or a sudden reduction in vision

Alternatives When LASIK Eye Surgery Is Not Suitable

If LASIK is not recommended, another vision correction approach may still be suitable.

Refractive Lens Exchange

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) replaces the eye's natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens to correct refractive errors and reduce dependence on glasses. It may be considered for selected patients based on their age, lens condition and visual goals.

Implantable Phakic Contact Lens

Implantable Phakic Contact Lens (IPCL) is an intraocular lens implanted in the eye to correct refractive errors without removing the natural lens. It may be considered for selected patients who are not ideal candidates for laser vision correction.

LASIK Eye Surgery FAQs

Quick answers to common questions before booking an assessment.
What are the risks, side effects and limitations of LASIK?
LASIK is an elective surgical procedure and, like any surgery, carries potential risks and side effects. These may include dry eyes, glare, halos, starbursts, light sensitivity, fluctuating vision, under-correction or over-correction, infection or inflammation, flap-related complications with flap-based LASIK, and corneal ectasia in susceptible eyes. Rarely, there may be a reduction in best-corrected visual quality. Your ophthalmologist will assess your eyes and explain the risks most relevant to you before treatment.
LASIK is one type of laser eye surgery. IKONIK also offers flapless laser vision correction options.
Selected cases of astigmatism can be treated with laser vision correction, depending on the prescription and corneal assessment.
Numbing eye drops are used before treatment, so significant pain during the procedure is not expected. Pressure or discomfort can occur, and surface-based flapless procedures may have more discomfort during early healing than flap-based LASIK.
LASIK is intended to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses, but complete spectacle independence cannot be guaranteed. Some patients may still need glasses for certain activities, and normal age-related changes such as presbyopia can affect near vision later in life.

LASIK permanently reshapes the treated corneal tissue, but your eyes can continue to change naturally over time. Prescription changes, regression, presbyopia and age-related eye conditions such as cataract may affect vision later in life. Some patients may therefore need glasses, contact lenses or further assessment in the future.

An enhancement may be considered in selected cases, but only after the prescription has stabilised and the cornea is shown to have sufficient thickness and suitable shape.
Dry eye should be assessed and managed before surgery because it can affect comfort, measurements and recovery.
