LASIK is typically the first procedure most people think of when they consider getting rid of their spectacles.  It's quick, effective, and transformative for many.

LASIK is not for everyone. Some people can’t have it because of their eye health, prescription, or age. And for those with cataracts, LASIK won’t help at all.

That doesn’t mean your options are over. At IKONIK Eye Centre, we see a lot of people who’ve been told LASIK isn’t possible, but who still want to see clearly without depending on glasses. For them, procedures like cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange (RLE) can be the answer.

Why Look Beyond LASIK?

LASIK changes the shape of your cornea — that’s the clear front part of your eye. But if the problem is inside the eye, in the lens, LASIK can’t fix it.

You might be better suited to a lens-based procedure if you:

  • Have cataracts making your vision cloudy

  • Have a prescription that’s too high for LASIK

  • Have corneal problems that make laser surgery risky

  • Struggle with presbyopia (needing reading glasses after 40

Lens surgery replaces the eye’s natural lens with a clear, artificial one designed just for you.

What Are Cataracts?

Think of your eye’s lens like the lens in a camera. Over time, that lens can become cloudy — that’s a cataract. It’s usually a slow process, so you might just notice you need stronger glasses, or that night driving is harder than it used to be.

Other signs include:

  • Blurry or dim vision

  • Glare or halos around lights

  • Colours looking faded

  • Needing brighter light to read

Glasses can help in the early stages, but eventually, surgery is the only way to get your vision truly clear again.

Cataract Surgery at IKONIK

Cataract surgery is one of the most common operations in the world — and it has a very high success rate. At IKONIK, we use gentle, precise technology to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a crystal-clear intraocular lens (IOL).

There are different lens options:

  • Monofocal – sharp at one distance (usually far), reading glasses still needed

  • Multifocal – focus at near, intermediate, and far without multiple glasses

  • Toric – corrects astigmatism as well as the cataract

We’ll talk through your daily habits and vision goals before helping you choose the right one.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

RLE is almost the same as cataract surgery — but you don’t need to have a cataract to do it. We replace your natural lens with a new one to fix high prescriptions or age-related focusing issues.

And since the natural lens is gone, you’ll never get cataracts in the future. It’s both vision correction and prevention.

Which One’s Right for You?

It’s pretty simple:

  • Already have cataracts? → Cataract surgery

  • No cataracts but big vision problems or presbyopia? → RLE

Both can give you clear, lasting vision with less reliance on glasses.

What to Expect

If you come to IKONIK Eye Centre, here’s how it usually goes:

  • Eye check-up: Scans, measurements, and a full assessment.

  • Selecting a lens: Should be based on your lifestyle and needs.
  • The process: Which usually takes less than 30 minutes, is carried out under local anesthesia.

  • Recovery: With our team's aftercare help, you'll have clearer eyesight in just a couple of days.

At every stage, we make sure you're at ease and well-informed.
